City of Jackson Resampling Water at 13 Homes for 'Actionable' Lead Levels After State Report

The Mississippi Department of Health (MSDH) on Thursday, Jan. 28, reported to the City of Jackson the results of random water samples taken by the state agency from residences in the City in June 2015. Of the samples taken at 58 residences, 13 showed lead above the actionable levels of 0.015. Within an hour of notification from MSDH, the City dispatched water sample kits to those 13 locations for immediate re-sampling. The results are expected back within two weeks.

Tribute to Slain Men Hits Roadblock

At the request of the Philadelphia Coalition, Sen. Gloria Williamson, D-Philadelphia, introduced Senate Bill 2961, which would name Mississippi Hwy. 19 from Philadelphia to Lauderdale County the "Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner Memorial Highway" after the trio that was kidnapped and killed by Klansmen just off that highway on June 21, 1964. However, it looks as though the bill will never be voted on thanks to Sen. Billy Hewes III, R-Gulfport, the chairman of the Senate Highways and Transportation Committee.

I first saw the Juke Joint Duo in 2007 in Clarksdale at My Brother Sports Bar, a dim, smoky dive bar nestled on 3rd Street just around the corner from Morgan Freeman's Ground Zero Blues Club. I Made Up My Mind, Again

The past two weeks have been crazy: work, essays to write, babysitting, sinusitis... you name it, I had it. Yet, somewhere in the midst of that, I remembered that on my list of wellness goals, I said that I was going to take up a new hobby. After thinking about what I really enjoy, I have two possible contenders - learning to play the guitar and crocheting. I have always wanted to learn to play the instrument, and I have had piano lessons before, but I would like to take a crack at strumming some tunes and learning a few cool licks to impress my friends and family. Maybe if I learn to play well enough, I could play for my church on Sundays. As far as crocheting goes, I kept putting off the idea until I saw this cool scarf that James Anderson, the Scarvin' Artist, brought to the office as a gift for Donna, the editor-in-chief. The scarf is a beautiful wine color, and the yarn is as soft as cotton candy. I want to make one of those, or at least 12 to give out as Christmas presents. I guess I'll take a trip to the craft store and see what kind of starter kits they have.

Phony Penis Raises Questions

Just when Doctor S thought he had seen it all in sports, along comes Onterrio Smith, the dope-smoking Minnesota Vikings running back. It seems Smith was detained at an airport recently when security found vials of white powder in his carry-on bag along with a prosthetic penis. Turns out the substance was dried, powdered urine for use in The Original Whizzinator. This package, which includes a pump and the aforementioned faux phallus, is used to defeat drug tests. Smith is a two-time loser under the NFL's drug policy. He was suspended for four games in 2004 after testing positive for smoking the tree. If he's caught again, he will be suspended for an entire season. Smith lamely claimed that the Whizzinator belonged to his "cousin." Uh huh. The kit is sold by Puck Technologies in Signal Hill, Calif., and if their Web site can be believed, this phony pee pee is changing lives all over America.

Family Night at the Senators

It's going to be one wild night of hits Friday, May 27, when the Jackson Convention & Visitors Bureau kicks off its summer tourism season at Smith-Wills Stadium. Free to the public, it all begins at 6 p.m. when the gates open and the family fun begins. There will be space jumps, obstacles courses, batting helmets for the first 500 kids, live animals from the Jackson Zoo and the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, National Child I.D. Kits from the Metro Jackson Crime Stoppers Board, and loads of entertainment! Give-aways from members of the Metro Jackson Attractions Association, a co-sponsor of the event, will be announced after every inning. "Sue the T-Rex" will also make a special appearance, just weeks before the real "Sue" replica arrives for the summer exhibit at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science on Saturday, June 18. Sue will be joined by Zany Zebra from the Jackson Zoo, which opens its new African Savannah exhibit the following day. The main event begins at 7:05 p.m., when the Jackson Senators play the Shreveport Sports.

How can your life be truly full and rich when you don't have a personal digital projector? (I ask myself this kind of stuff all the time.) Two different companies—LumenLabs and Benq—are offering $500 projectors for the first time that might make our collective personal projector dream a reality. The LumenLab (http://www.lumenlab.com) PM Projector is the first full product from a company that focuses on do-it-yourself projector kits (PM stands for "pre-made"). It's $499 shipped, supports component and S-video input as well as VGA, has a built-in TV tuner, and it uses extremely inexpensive bulbs, unlike many professional projectors. It includes built-in speakers, a remote and picture rotation for mounting to the ceiling, if you're so inclined. The Benq model (http://www.benq.com) only offers 800x600 resolution for PC connections, but it's brighter and pre-configured for HD TV output. (It's also $100 pricier.) Hook it up to your theoretical Apple iTV device and you're in the home project theater business for just a few Cs. (Both are due for release in November, just in time for someone else to feel obliged to buy it for you. Yahtzee!)
