My, My Mississippi

Mississippi is the soil of my soul. My childhood in Waynesboro gave me the foundation to grow into a decades-long career songwriter, producer, and collaborator with artists like Patti LaBelle, Natalie Cole and Aretha Franklin. I wouldn't be the artist I am today without the great Magnolia State.

Southern Chili Twist Pumpkin Pie & Bourbon Cream

I don't know about y'all, but the highlight of my Thanksgiving is most definitely the pumpkin pie. You can take all that turkey and its fixins! All I want is a lil' dessert; preferably spicy and ultra dense.

Jon Spencer and Matt Verta-Ray's Heavy Trash

Yep Roc Records to release the duo's self-titled debut on 4/19/05. THERE IS A SECRET PLACE where even the best-intentioned rockabilly explorations are scarred by dirty guitars, bad dreams, and lust gone wrong...Where murder ballads rub up against filthy R&B and frantic rock'n'roll...Where country ruminations drip with echo and sadness... This is where SPENCER and VERTA-RAY fermented their very souls and gave birth to HEAVY TRASH, the perfect soundtrack for boozy all-night throw downs, pettin' parties and psychedelic fright shows.

Upcoming Band Promotes Natural Disaster Awareness

The band "Crews South" will be playing at the Voodoo Lounge on July 20th, from 11:15 p.m. till 12:30 a.m. in efforts of raising awareness of the F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Foundation. Band members include lead vocals Aaron Mordecai, back up vocals Lynn Birmingham, and Andy Pollard of Alabama along with local artists such as Trent Lewis, Jeremy Rainey and Nick Stroud, band leader and road manager, of the Jackson music scene. Crews South's sound is an original soulful click between current country rhythm rock and jazzy blues. They grab the ears of many genres. Their lyrics such as "The band is on and the music is tight," and "I wonder what I would see if we could paint our lives" describe their originality and unique style.

[Music] Crossing Over

Trying to discuss music with Donnie Cross is a cumbersome experience, to say the least. He has meaningful thoughts about the world of music but is far from laconic when discussing his as-yet-unreleased project, "Soundtrack To My Soul," and his future plans. As I sit with Cross, two things are prevalent—his love of the art of hip-hop and the seemingly non-effect of the vodka he consumes.

"Folk Funk," Bobby Rush

So why the hell isn't Bobby Rush famous?

In a 50-plus year career, he's recorded well over 20 albums, one with Philly Soul legends Gamble and Huff. Last year he starred in one of the films in the Martin Scorcese-produced series "The Blues." He's won a stack of Living Blues awards and grabbed a Grammy nomination for an album made when he was nearly 60. Even soul-gospel greats The Staple Singers have done one of his songs. In the past two months he's played in eight states and Canada, and the next couple months will see him hitting a chunk of Europe.
