[City Buzz] A Time to Speak
A TIME TO SPEAK: Due to it being the 40th anniversary of Freedom Summer, 2004 seems to be the year of activism in the state of Mississippi. In fact, at a Feb. 24 press conference in the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., members of the Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner Justice Coalition officially launched what they're calling "Freedom Summer 2004," to honor the memory of the three young men killed in Neshoba County by Klansmen in 1964. And the group isn't just about memorializing; they want positive action. A 20-bus caravan will leave New York City on June 9 bound for Mississippi, making 20 stops along the way for memorials, door-to-door voter registration and anti-racism workshops. Alice Walker, Andrew Young and Marian Wright Edelman are honorary chairmen of the group. …

City Issues Boil Water Notice
[Verbatim from the City of Jackson] The City of Jackson Water/Sewer Utilities Division has issued a precautionary boil water advisory until further notice for all customers on the City's well water system located in the western part of the City and Hinds County. Numerous water line breaks on the water system have caused the system to lose its pressure, resulting in this precautionary boil water notice. The system should recover as breaks are repaired.
It's the Weekend
If you're feeling dramatic this weekend, head over to the Jackson Academy Performing Arts Center tonight to see the Ballet Magnificat! Spring Concert Series. Tickets can be purchased online for $10-$30. If ballet isn't quite your thing, take a drive down Interstate 20 to Clinton and see the play "The Watch They Keep," at 7 p.m. at the Old Clinton Junior High School Auditorium for $12. This weekend is a great time for finding unique holiday gifts at the 30th annual Mistletoe Marketplace at the Mississippi Trade Mart (1200 Mississippi Street). Shop until 8 p.m. tonight or head over tomorrow from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. $10. If big crowds aren't your thing, head to New Stage Theatre (1100 Carlisle St., 601-948-3533) for a production of William Gibson's "The Miracle Worker" or to Jackson State's Rose E. McCoy Auditorium (601-979-4309) for a performance of Ernest Gaines' "A Lesson Before Dying." Both shows close tomorrow, so this is a great evening to go. Where's the one place to go for all of Jackson's happenings? The JFP Events Calendar, of course.

Thirsty for some drinks and music? Start off your weekend at Hal & Mal's in their Big Room with a show by Robert Randolph and the Family Band. The show starts at 9 p.m., tickets are $25 at the door. Also tonight, Rhonda Richmond will also be performing at Afrika Book Cafe at 9 p.m. Tickets are $15. If music isn't your thing, Rainbow Whole Foods Co-Operative Grocery will have a dinner and a movie in the Rainbow Plaza at 7:30 p.m. The featured film is "Sita Sings the Blues," and a vegetarian meal will be provided. Tickets are $16 at the door and $14 for members. If you've got some energy left over from this short week, head over to Body Benefits on Pear Orchard Road tonight at 5 p.m. for a three-hour spinning workshop. With Valentine's Day rapidly approaching, brave the weather and head to circa (2771 Old Canton Road) for Valentine's Date Night tonight at 5 p.m. for inspiration and gifts. The Jackson Free Press is the sponsor of the event which includes catering from Bon Ami, wine, champagne, artwork by Christy Henderson and music by Pam Confer and Jazz Beautiful; free. Complete your date night with a trip to the Russell C. Davis Planetarium (201 E. Pascagoula St.) to see "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest" at 8:50 p.m.; $9. If you're' in the mood for some late-night entertainment, head to Martin's (241 S. State St.) afterward to see Frank and the Meltones with Danny Choctaw and the Death March. Petite Sirah Is No Wimp
There has been a long debate about the origin of Petite Sirah, a somewhat obscure grape varietal. It was once said to be related to the great Rhone varietal, Syrah. Later the belief was that it was, in fact, Durif, a nearly extinct varietal, also from the Rhone. Or it could have been Peloursin, a really obscure French varietal. By the 1990s, however, DNA fingerprinting confirmed that it was indeed a very distant relative of Syrah. I guess they should have stuck with their first conclusion, huh?
