Celebrating 15 Years in the DIY City
The Jackson Free Press is 15 years old. It's still sinking in a little. No, it doesn't seem like "yesterday" to me when we started the JFP—because it's been a long road, and sometimes a tough one.
Lawsuit to Change Mississippi Flag An ‘Uphill Battle,’ But Could Work
A black Mississippi lawyer suing Gov. Phil Bryant for flying the state flag could be successful if he can prove that the state's original intent for putting the Confederate battle emblem on the flag's canton was racist and discriminatory back in 1894.

"As the Smithsonian reminds us, the past will never really be past if we don’t drag it into the light of day."

Dick Cheney: One of the Worst CEOs in History?
(Click on the free day pass to read the full story without a subscription.)
From Salon today: "it's clear that Cheney deserves another nomination: as one of the worst CEOs in recent American history. Of course, there are plenty of CEOs that deserve to be on that list, including Enron's Kenneth Lay, Tyco's Dennis Kozlowski and Adelphia's John Rigas. While those bosses certainly are being pilloried, Cheney's disastrous five-year-long tenure at Halliburton deserves far more scrutiny than the mainstream business press has bothered to provide."

Little Big Store picnic this Sunday, Oct. 21
The Little Big Store's monthly backyard picnic is this Sunday, October 21. All ages, free, bring your own food/pets/kids. These are cool, unique opportunities to get the family out of the house for some good music, and you might take some music home with you too. This Sunday, Braden Land and Mark Huff will perform. It starts at 1pm, so you churchgoers shouldn't have a problem getting out to Raymond.
Free Speech Alley Is Free Of Speech
Anyone anticipating protests on the level of those at this year's Republican convention would be sorely disappointed. The designated protest area, an old football field across the street, behind a music building and down a hill from the Ford Center, was almost entirely empty when Matt and I visited it this afternoon. The 10 port-a-potties at one edge of the field nearly outnumbered people. A handful of Ole Miss students, writers for the Daily Mississippian, sat in a circle on the grass, smoking quietly and enjoying the late afternoon sun. Only as we we were leaving did we find true protesters, two Oxford residents carrying a sign that read "911 Was An Inside Job.

Fall is here!
The weather is amazing right now. Throw on a simple hoodie over your tshirt and you're ready to rock the walking paths. But watch out for the annual coming of the State Fair! With it comes funnel cakes and deep fried something-or-others. I hear the Texas State Fair replaced their deep fried coke with deep fried beer this year! Then there's the buttery-delicious roasted corn and the free biscuits with syrup and fresh pulled taffy and yakisoba and lemonaids and sodas and beers and a million other things that are soooo good yet sooo bad. I plan on eating while I walk... a few laps around the fairgrounds ought to burn off that roasted corn I'm salivating over.
The Tyson Twist
There's trouble coming to River City ... maybe. A day after saying Saturday's fight in Memphis was off, heavyweight has-been Mike Tyson changed his mind and said that facial tattoo or no, no training or no, he was going to fight. So call the prospects a definite maybe. Showtime will show the fight (maybe) along with a Jay-Z concert (for sure). And it's a free Showtime weekend. But there's nothing like seeing a freak show in person. (Did Dr. S mention that Tonya Harding is going to fight a woman from Mississippi, too? Maybe.)
Yettra Specks
Yettra Specks scored five of his 15 points in the final minute to help Jackson State pull away and beat Drake 68-63 on Saturday.
Group That Sends Books to Inmates Ends Mississippi Lawsuit

Here's to Alternative Minds
I just moved "back home" to Jackson. I'm originally from Franklin County. I've lived in Atlanta since graduating USM in 1987. I was very excited to run across the Jackson Free Press. One of my biggest worries about moving back here is dealing with the overly conservative, unquestioning mentality that expects everyone to have two right shoes, and all the load that accompanies. Your pub gives me hope that there are plenty of alternative minds flourishing in Mississippi, which I've always known, but alternative minds who are not afraid to present themselves. Thank you!
