You're right. I edited this yesterday after it appeared in the story and the caption, but missed the headline. I'll talk to our daily editors about it.
There's no reason to "get a grip." You're missing the point. People who do other illegal things are never called "illegal" or "illegals" -- because a person cannot be "illegal." A person can be a felon, or undocumented, or even obnoxious, but they're not "illegal." Your analogy doesn't work because it's not analogous: It doesn't call the person "illegal," but the activity, which is fine.
This was archaic, insulting language from another time, and is quickly being put on mothballs with other offensive language as our country quickly grows up on immigration issues.
Be sure to also read Ronni Mott's blog post last Wednesday about Herring's lobbying controversy. The other media weren't reporting this potential problem last week.
Beyond the pay issue, though, Maddymomma, don't you think it's really disturbing to appoint someone who calls themselves a "pro-life lobbyist" (and is now registered as one as of two weeks ago) onto a state health board? Would you be cool with someone who calls themselves a "pro-choice lobbyist" being appointed to the health board? If you're cool with one, you must be cool with the other -- especially since the first one is actually lobbying in opposition to current law and the second one isn't.
No need to blast you, Maddymomma. But we do need to ask how you know that Ms. Herring, who proudly calls herself a "lobbyist," has never been paid to lobby.

This is just horrifying. The city's collective heart is breaking over this tragedy. What a tough couple weeks Jackson has faced.
