Sex and Pay Raises

The Mississippi Tea Party tried to target immigrants once again in a bill that would have charged $5 for out-of-country wire transfers exceeding $500, plus 1 percent of the amount of the transaction. The bill, authored by Sen. Joey Fillingane, R-Sumrall, died in the Senate Finance Committee last Wednesday.

'Fancy Fantastic Knots'

The members of Jackson-based punk-pop band At Cliffs End know how to go through vans. In the less than two years since the band formed and began touring, the group has seen one burn due to wiring problems, another destroyed when they collided with a tree, and a third is currently under repair. But, fortunately, the young musicians also know how to create sharp guitar riffs, strong lyrics and growing crowds.

[Rev] (Don't) Sound The Alarm!

Saw a sad sight today, reminding me to get to writing my column about noise pollution and car alarms. There she was: a honking, lights-flashing Ford Taurus being pulled by a tow truck. The car's protests were like an old grandmother's plea for help: "someone stole my purse and put me in a headlock." But did anyone care? No. We just clapped our hands over our ears and watched the thing get dragged away.

A Mississippi inmate who escaped from prison over the weekend was captured Tuesday in a county where he had been convicted of murder, and about a dozen prison employees were suspended because the staff waited more than a day to tell the state Department of Corrections he was missing, department officials said.

Good tidings fellow Jacksonians! I cannot believe this is the very last Friday of the decade. Christmas 2019 has been archived for the books and New Year’s Day 2020 is looming on the horizon. I sincerely hope you all thoroughly enjoyed your holidays and that positive energy continues to carry you through the rest of this season.

Inspiration, Indeed

The melodies of gospel music were a constant staple during my childhood, whether it played softly while my mother read her Bible or my dad sang its refrains while doing the dishes. Gospel music feeds and stirs the soul.

Perrin Lamb, Jeremy Lister, Eliot Morris and Jefferson Bros. at FIRE Nov. 10

Check out each band at their MySpace pages below:

My good friend and former Clintonian (or is it Clinton-ite?) Perrin Lamb is playing for the first time in Jackson along with fellow Mississippian Jeremy Lister, Birmingham's Eliot Morris and headliner Jefferson Brothers Band on November 10 at Fire. Lamb and Lister both left Mississippi for Nashville a few years back and have had a successful run so far in the music scene there. A slightly different vibe than most Fire shows, Lamb, Lister and Morris all have an acoustic folk-pop quality about them, while Jefferson Brothers leans more toward the Train/Collective Soul side of things. Should be a good time. Doors open at 9pm. Cover is $10.00. 21 and up.
