Media Join to Unseal Katrina Settlement

Y'all Politics put it this way:

Several media outlets are putting their combined muscle together in a federal civil action regarding the 2007 settlement in the case of State Farm Insurance vs. Attorney General Jim Hood. Jackson New Media, Inc., publisher of the Y'all Politics blog, filed to unseal the settlement yesterday, and three TV stations filed joinder motions to intervene: WLBT in Jackson, WLOX in Biloxi and WDAM in Hattiesburg.

Take Them a Meal

Prior to October, I had never heard of Take Them A Meal. The free site provides sample schedules, schedule ideas, recipes and tips. It allows you to either create a meal schedule or search for existing ones. As the meal coordinator, you set up the account and choose the date range for the meals. From there, you can add information about the family: any likes, dislikes and allergies, the family's phone numbers, address and driving directions. Once completed, you enter the e-mail addresses of potential meal providers and that's it.

Art Space 86: Unframed @Unwrapped

Art Space 86 will host a free, pop-up art gallery event, Unframed @Unwrapped, on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., located at The Flamingo JXN.

Read a Salon interview with Danny Goldberg, author of the book, ""Dispatches From the Culture Wars: How the Left Lost Teen Spirit." The reviewer writes: "As Goldberg points out -- and no other political pundit, to my knowledge, has noticed this -- in 1996, Bill Clinton beat Bob Dole by 19 points among voters under 24. In 2000, George W. Bush and Gore were dead even in that age group, a total of about 9 million votes. Restore even half of Clinton's '96 edge with youth, and the result of the election is clearly different, with or without the much-debated Nader factor." He adds: "But would it really be so daring for Democratic candidates to make it clear that they support free speech, and that what Americans want to watch and listen to is entirely their own business? Wouldn't it be OK for candidates to the left of Bush to admit that fact, and to point out that they represent a party that, at least historically, has stood alongside the civil rights movement, the abortion rights movement, the environmental movement and the lesbian and gay liberation struggle?"

Ukraine: Truce Results in 1st Casualty-Free Day

Ukraine's president said Friday that a fragile truce between his government's troops and Russian-backed separatists in east Ukraine had resulted in the first day free of deaths or injuries for his soldiers since the conflict erupted months ago.

Supes' Fuelman Records

Fuel purchases by the Hinds County Board of Supervisors have cost county taxpayers over $10,000 since January 2009, according to documents obtained by the Jackson Free Press. The Jackson Free Press obtained Fuelman expense reports for each of the five county supervisors through a public-records request.

If information wants to be free, it cannot be happy with the administration of Mayor Frank Melton. Since the mayor took office in July, the Jackson Free Press has made a number of requests for information, with decidedly uneven results.

Partnership for a Healthy Rankin/Simpson/Scott County welcomes you to "Tobacco-Free Evening in the Park " It will be held at the Pelahatchie Muscadine Park located downtown Pelahatchie on Sunday, May 21, 2006. The activities will begin at 4:00 p.m., including tobacco skits from youth who participate in the PHM (Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi Tobacco Prevention programs : RAT/SWAT/FREE & Frontline. We are also inviting some of the youth to display their musical talents in songs. There will also be food, fun and games for the youth.

About a month ago, I admonished up-and-coming artists to embrace the concept of free music. The argument was simple: Free music makes it easier for artists to disseminate their product to as many people as possible. Exposure is the new currency.

Checking the expiration date on a meat package is as important as knowing whether the meat is loaded with chemicals and hormones. A constant complaint of buying organic foods is the comparatively higher prices, but the counter-argument is how important the long-term effects are compared to the instant gratification of buying cheaper food. If a consumer is able to purchase a laptop, a smartphone, a television with cable and many more luxuries, then the same consumer is able to buy foods that will not affect the body as badly as corn-fed beef or pesticide-soaked vegetables.

JPS Employee Raised Overbilling Concerns in 2008

Over a year ago, a Jackson Public Schools employee warned supervisors that a private tutoring company may have overbilled the district by $400,000 or more. To date, JPS has not sought repayment, however, despite receiving citations from the state for lax oversight of tutoring companies.
