Love That Cup

I know that Jackson Free Press readers don't rate Popeyes chicken as the best in Jackson, but the fast-food restaurant has a neat cup it's giving away. It pays tribute to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and features the hats of Negro Leagues teams. It's a small thing but Dr. S thinks it's neat. Call it lagniappe.

Musicians Unite for Skaters

One day, Jackson's (gently) aging skaters, scarred-knee veterans of a thousand plywood ramps and endless miles of dented handrails, came to a realization. Society now recognizes skateboarding as a sport, just like basketball or baseball. But while Jackson has its courts and soccer pitches and even competitive swimming pools, it doesn't have a free skate park for kids. And so, SkateMS was born.

Elders to Speak at World AIDS Day Event

Jackson AIDS activist Robin Webb told the Jackson Free Press last month that AIDS disproportionately affects the South, African Americans and men. In Mississippi, Webb said, approximately 9,000 people are currently living with the disease, yet fewer than half receive any treatment. Some don't even know they're infected. Some never get tested because of fear—they're afraid of the diagnosis or afraid of anyone finding out they're infected. Others simply can't afford the therapy or can't travel to get to a doctor.

A Soldier's Daughter

I read recently that patriotism is learned behavior. If that is true then I learned from my dad that America is beautiful. He joined the Navy at the end of World War II and served as Yeoman 3rd Class on the aircraft carrier USS Rendova.

DIY: Make A Bowl

Scott Jarrett, a local artist with a particular affinity for clay, recently sat down with the Jackson Free Press to demonstrate the art of creating a bowl. While "throwing" and forming, he shared many tricks of the trade, all the while demonstrating the skill of a master potter. Finally, desiring to give the public an easy way to make bowls of their own, Scott condensed all of his bowl-making knowledge into four simple steps. By following this outline, even an average Joe can have a piece prepared for the upcoming bowl season (but get a wheel, first!).
