Rock This Town: 20,000+ Expected at Crawfish Boil
Three things are guaranteed to make a spring weekend even better: beer, crawfish and rock 'n' roll, all of which you can find at this weekend's Miller Lite Crawfish Boil at the Coliseum Fairgrounds. The rain-or-shine event brings big-name rockers Live, Staind, Three Days Grace, Puddle of Mudd and P.O.D. to Jackson, along with local up-and-comers Absence of Concern and many others. The JFP is among the sponsors.
Boyz In Da Row
"Saints Row" is part of a growing genre known as "GTA Clone," referring to the "Grand Theft Auto" series, built on free-roaming criminal adventurers. The similarities are instantly recognizable, from the ability to commit crimes like larceny and homicide—causing policemen, and later FBI agents, to hunt you down—to the mission-based system, as well as the mini-games that allow you to gain money and respect. One could accuse this game of plagiarism, but don't be too harsh. "Saints Row" may be an imitator, but at least it does it well.
Keith Tonkel
For going on 35 years, Keith Tonkel has been in the pulpit, serving the congregation and neighborhood of Wells United Methodist Church on Bailey Avenue. His office, on the second-story back corner over the parking lot, is filled with memorabilia and books tightly packed into floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and atop every surface except for the big wooden desk and where the blue iMac sits. An old cloth-covered armchair and black vinyl loveseat, both well-sat-in, provide seating for Tonkel and his many visitors.
Food Court Wellness
I just got back from an extended weekend in Dallas with thousands of my closest friends at Project A-Kon, the longest running anime convention in North America. I have been attending this event for about a decade now (seriously? Sheesh!) and I always look forward to it as my big vacation of the year. There are so many things that pull me back each year, and seeing all my out of state (and some international) friends for one long weekend of pure chaos is just part of that attraction. Something is happening nearly 24 hours a day from Thursday though Sunday. How do you keep up with that AND stay healthy?
Holly Smith
Holly Smith has fond memories of her father, who passed away two years ago from Alzheimer's disease. He was an electrician with a love of history and an outgoing, friendly man. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in his early 60s and passed away at age 68. Smith's aunt has also been diagnosed with the disease.

‘The Young Hipublicans'
Read about young, hip Republicans on college campuses in the New York Times magazine—and the groups that are funding them: "As with college conservative movements in the past, the recent wave has been fueled and often financed by an array of conservative interest groups, of which there are, today, almost too many to keep straight: Young Americans for Freedom; Young America's Foundation; the Leadership Institute; the Collegiate Network; the Intercollegiate Studies Institute. These groups spend money in various ways to push a right-wing agenda on campuses: some make direct cash 'grants' to student groups to start and run conservative campus newspapers; others provide free training in 'conservative leadership,' often providing heavily subsidized travel to their 'publishing programs'; others provide help with the hefty speaking fees for celebrity right-wing speakers. Through these coordinated activities, these groups have embarked in the last three years on a concerted campus recruitment drive to turn temperamentally conservative youngsters into organized right-wing activists."

JFP Re-launches Truthwatch as Reader Forum
As Mississippi heads into the fall campaign season, the Jackson Free Press has re-launched the Truthwatch blog, in order that readers might question and test statements made by candidates. Truthwatch was active during the last city elections in Jackson. Now the blog has been converted into a reader forum so that readers might start their own posts, asking questions about statements made by candidates and in their ads. We encourage your participation. The first two new questions involve statements that Hinds County District Attorney Faye Peterson and her challenger Robert Smith made the day after the primaries. She accused him of "being in bed with criminals" (Truthwatch #43), and he accused her of "not being involved with cases" in her office. (Truthwatch #42). Go take a look and help us out.

Azia's Picks 12-6-19
We just had Thanksgiving break, so this week after returning to work, time seemed to drag slowly at first, but hey, now it's Friday again! Gratefulness is the word for this time of year, and I hope you are just as thankful as I am to see another weekend in the Capital City. I start to feel like a child again as I drive around the city and see the Christmas lights glittering in the still night, framing the winter scene as the past slowly wilts away and the transition into newness begins.
