Something for Tomorrow guitarist/vocalist Kenny Davis and guitarist Will Brown were childhood friends who picked up their instruments for the first time while attending high school in Jackson. The constantly joking duo—according to Brown, the band "doesn't rock, it mountains"—played coffee houses before meeting up with bassist Travis Dance at Mississippi State. They went through several different drummers until Brown put down the guitar and exchanged it for a pair of drumsticks, finalizing the band's lineup. It wasn't long before they left Starkville to return home to Jackson and refine their craft.

Bell Is Wrong Again

It's official. Jackson State football coach James Bell is an idiot. Throughout his reign of error, Bell has blamed members of the news media for his team's failures on the field, specifically WLBT-3 sports anchor Rob Jay and Clarion-Ledger reporter Mark Alexander. Bell's attempts to freeze these two men out has failed, just like everything else the coach has done at JSU. In fact, Jay is now the radio play-by-play man for the Tigers.

Goodman County is a place where the road had fallen in Goodman, a town near Lexington, Miss. In a place generally occupied by hunting and drugs, this fallen place in the road was a place for poets, writers and musicians to congregate. One night, a student who was out of his skull looked up to the sky and said, "I love being in Goodman County." The others all looked at him and said, "Goodman isn't a county." Like a scene out of a movie, he picked up the gravel beneath him and let it run through his fingers. "I love being in Goodman County," he yelled.

I have a confession to make: I am inherently suspicious of confessional albums with a message. So when I received a copy of Anne Davis' "Letters, Prayers, and Journal Entries"—which, by the way, is a very confessional piece of work—I had my misgivings about doing a review. As I glanced through the lyrics, credits and art work on the record, it became clear to me that Davis, a Jackson native and longtime Nashville resident, is serious about showing the world who she is, where she's been and how serious she is about her faith. I braced myself for a listen, thinking that this must be yet another earnest female singer-songwriter with a beautiful voice and not much new to say.
